On a major tunnelling project in Kowloon, Hong Kong, China Harbour Transfield Joint Venture (CHTJV) has seen the benefits of hiring specialist equipment from Pigott Shaft Drilling Limited (PSD). The UK based mud cleaning and solids separation specialist was engaged to supply equipment to mix & clean the mud for a 5.15m diameter tunnel in mixed ground for CHTJV. The client recorded no delays to the tunnelling operation caused by the slurry treatment plant. The plant was operated by specially trained local labour, overseen by a PSD supervisor. Project Manager for CHTJV, David Hake said: “Congratulations, PSD just managed to sneak in there with “0%” TBM delays to whole numbers. The duration was actually 10 hours overall or 0.23% but a fantastic achievement. It is so low that it is hard to remember even that much!”
CHTJV approached PSD in April 2001 after the UK company was recommended by a member of the team with previous experience of PSD’s work. PSD beat a number of major international players to the contract because CHTJV were so impressed by the company’s high level of technical expertise, the standard of PSD’s equipment and their understanding of the needs of the project. PSD’s equipment was rapidly assembled on site in Hong Kong in June 2002 and included a 4 stage separation plant capable of treating up to 750m3/hr of slurry for the 5.15m Herrenknecht Slurry TBM. Excavation work was completed on 26th February 2004.
