The New Tyne Crossing involves the construction of a new two-lane, immersed tube tunnel under the River Tyne at Newcastle between East Howdon on the north bank and Jarrow on the south bank. It involves the construction of a new toll plaza on the north bank and a new interchange on the south bank. This interchange will connect the local road system with the A19.
Construction of the New Tyne Crossing began in spring 2008. The new tunnel should be completed by December 2010 at which point the existing vehicle tunnel will close for refurbishment. The crossing should be fully operational in December 2011.
PSD are pleased to be providing desanders and desilters and bentonite testing equipment for the diaphragm walling works for the tunnel portals and the cut and cover section of the tunnel.
