In December 2005, Link200 JV (a joint venture comprising Leighton Contractors (Asia) Ltd, Balfour Beatty, Kumagai and John Holland Construction Pty Ltd) awarded the contract to PSD for the supply of a 1350m3/hr, three stage slurry treatment plant. Link200 JV are the main civil works contractor for Contract KDB200 of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation’s (KCRC) Kowloon Southern Link (KSL) project, which involves the construction of West Kowloon Station and Tunnels from Jordan Road to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station and is worth HK$2,018 million.
PSD have previously worked with a Leighton-Kumagai JV in Hong Kong and with John Holland on the Kai Tak Transfer Scheme, also in Kowloon, which involved the construction of a 5.15m diameter sewerage tunnel through variable strata. PSD’s equipment performed amazingly well on Kai Tak, resulting in an incredible 0.23% downtime, which led the JV’s Tunnelling Manager, David Hake, to bring PSD on board early in 2005, well before Link200 had been awarded the contract. This enabled PSD’s input to be considered throughout the tender process.
The project involves about 2,300m of tunnelling, which is to be carried out using a Herrenknecht 8.0m diameter slurry TBM, mainly through fresh to moderately decomposed granite with some alluvial and marine deposits. PSD are supplying an SD1350 primary shaker, 3 No. SM450PSDP desanders, an S4-01 centrifuge and a high capacity S5-01 centrifuge with flocculation and bentonite preparation systems.
Upon completion, the KSL will provide a direct link between the Northwest New Territories and Tsim Sha Tsui. It will take only 30 minutes to travel from Tin Shui Wai to Tsim Sha Tsui East. KSL passengers will also have convenient access to the Northeast New Territories via the existing East Rail interchange at Hung Hom Station.
